TIRA - Manual Handling Risk Assessment Module

Health and Safety requires employees to undertake suitable and sufficient risk assessments; part of a risk assessors duties will include assessing manual handling risks. Duties on an Employer include; Employers shall as far as it is reasonably practicable, avoid the need for their employees to undertake any manual handling operations at work that involve a risk of them being injured. This is broken down in three key requirements. 1. Avoid - the need for hazardous manual handling, so far as is reasonably practicable, e.g. use mechanical devices; 2. Assess - the risk of injury from any hazardous manual handling that can't be avoided; and 3. Reduce - the risk of injury from hazardous manual handling, so far as is reasonably practical. TIRA's manual handling risk assessment guides the risk assessor through the manual handling risk assessment ensuring the risk assessment is undertaken in a plan and systematic way. TIRA's Manual Handling Risk Assessment covers the following area; Task Details: Task, Location, Individual, Number of Staff, Assessor, Dates etc The Task:  What's Involved, Which Parts of the Body are Used, Lift Methods i.e. stretching, twisting etc, work rates, PPE etc etc The Load: The Weight, Size, Shape, Rigid or Flexible, Unevenly Weighted etc, Contains Hazardous, Load Wet or Slippery etc etc The Environment:  Space Constraints, Floor Conditions, Light Conditions, Weather Conditions, Distractions, Obstructions, Proximity to Danger area (rivers, lakes, cesspits) etc etc The Individual: Strength Required, Training Skills Required, PPE requirements, Risk to new or expectant mothers, accident stats for task etc etc
